چکیده
Noise correlation processing extracts coherent signals from seemingly random noise data. Although this technique has been successfully used in processing ocean ambient noise data it has severe limitations due to the changing ocean environment and the spatial and temporal variability of the ambient noise field. In this project we are: (1) investigating the physics of the noise processing procedure that constrains the optimum correlation, (2) attempting to understand where and how the degradation of the derived time domain Green’s function (TDGF) comes about, and (3) exploit array and signal processing techniques to optimize the signal-to-clutter (otherwise known as the ‘signal-tonoise’) rate of the noise correlation processing.

The goal of this research is to test the hypothesis that inexpensive underwater acoustic measurements can be used to determine the wind speed and classify the destructive power of a hurricane with greater accuracy than standard satellite remote sensing techniques. It is proposed to do this by conducting field experiments in cooperation with the Mexican Navy just off the Mexican Isla Socorro whi...

Many environmental factors may contribute to acoustic clutter and adversely affect the performance of tactical sonar by introducing false alarms in the system. During the Main Acoustic Experiment (MAE) 2003 of the Acoustic Clutter program, densely populated fish shoals were identified to be the dominant cause of shallow water acoustic clutter in the New Jersey Continental Shelf. The mixing of c...

At megameter ranges, broadband receptions consist of early ray-like arrivals and a finale that is best described in terms of the low order modes. The energetic low mode signals are more strongly affected by internal wave scattering than the ray arrivals. By focusing on the low order modes, this project seeks to develop a better understanding of internal wave effects. The first objective of this...

The long-term goal of this research is to develop optimal array signal processing techniques for passive source localization in littoral shallow-water environments. It has long been known that multi-modal dispersion in a shallow water waveguide degrades the performance of bearing estimates by conventional plane-wave beamforming. This is due to spurious effects unique to the waveguide environmen...
متن کاملGeoacoustic Inversion Using the Vector Field
This research is being conducted under the Ocean Acoustics Graduate Traineeship / Special Research Award program. The first year of this award was FY10. The goal of this research is the study of new geoacoustic inverse methods using the information in the acoustic vector field. The fundamental question addressed by this effort is whether knowledge of the vector field can improve estimates for s...
